Boatage services consist of mooring, unmooring and Shifting commercial vessels calling at ports in their business operations. Etymologically, the boatman concept comes from old French "Laman". This term is derived from the Dutch "loostman" which means man of the probe, one who knows the funds and their treachery.

Professional Association of Boatage of ports of Channel, North Sea and Atlantic

In France, Boatage companies are grouped in a trade union, the SPLMNA (Boatage Professional Association of the English Channel, North Sea and Atlantic ports).

The professionnal asociation was created in june 2010 by a group of several boatage companies spread across 15 ports, from the Atlantic coast to the North Sea, representing aproximately 300 boatmen.

Its main roles areto forge closer links between the members, to harmonize procedures and o facilitate representation of he profesion to government authorities, shipping companies and ship-owners, doing so at a European and International level.
